LA (Associated Press) – Even before he makes his major league debut, Shea Langeliers will be in the Hall of Fame. Langeliers, a 24-year-old catching prospect, homered and threw out a runner attempting to steal third base in the American League’s 6-4 triumph on Saturday, earning MVP honors for the All-Star Futures Game.

His Victus Pro Reserved DT29 maple bat, size 34-32, is headed to Cooperstown. “It’s crazy, I came into today just excited to be here,” Langeliers said. New York Yankees prospect Jasson Dominguez and Minnesota’s Matt Wallner hit two-run homers in the third inning off San Francisco’s Kyle Harrison, who took the loss. Dominguez, at 19 the youngest AL prospect at the game, tied the score 3-3 with his 415-foot drive on a slider at the letters. Wallner homered three batters later on a hanging sinker for a 5-3 lead, a 115.3 mph drive hit harder than any home run by the major league Twins this year.

“In an ideal world, that’s what I would have done,” Wallner said. Langeliers, the oldest player on either team, added a solo homer in the fourth on a hanging changeup from Atlanta’s Jared Shuster. Langeliers caught Shuster last year at Double-A Mississippi before Oakland acquired Langeliers in the March trade that sent the first baseman Matt Olson to Atlanta.

Langeliers said, “I am aware of his potential. Last year, he made it quite easy for me to catch. I liked being on the other side of it. The third-best prospect overall, Corbin Carroll, failed to steal third and was thrown out.

Which was the more rewarding?

Without a doubt, Langeliers threw the runner out.

The Futures Game draws the best prospects. Julio Rodriguez, this year’s youngest All-Star at age 21, took part in the game the year before and was also selected to compete in the Home Run Derby on Monday night. The son of former big league pitcher Al Leiter, Jack Leiter, threw a 1-2-3 fourth inning. During the 2017 draught, Texas chose Leiter in the second round.

Darren Baker, the manager of Houston, joined the game in the fifth inning and hit a line drive that Chicago White Sox center fielder Oscar Colas made a diving catch on. Your Zulueta of Toronto faced one batter and earned the victory by retiring Francisco Alvarez of the Mets on a grounder to finish the third inning. Dillon Dingler, a future catcher for the Detroit Tigers, followed Langeliers to the plate. The former Ohio State star grounded out to second in his lone at-bat.

The sole Tigers prospect playing for the AL club was right-hander Wilmer Flores, who played alongside Dingler at AA Erie. The same-named brother of a Giants player, Flores, faced three batters in the seventh inning and allowed a double. Flores received credit for a hold but was also assessed a run when the runner moved up to third on a baulk and scored on a sacrifice fly. The teams clashed at Dodger Stadium three days prior to Tuesday’s 7 p.m. EDT All-Star Game at the venue.

In the ninth inning, Milwaukee’s Joey Wiemer hit a sacrifice fly that Oakland’s Denzel Clark managed to catch against the right-field wall. Jackson Chourio was retired by Yankees pitcher Ken Waldichuk, who then recorded the save.

Excited to be in a major league ballpark, players hung over the rails of the dugout to watch. The front row of the area behind the home plate was occupied by agent Scott Boras and his entourage.

Bobby Miller, a right-handed pitcher for the Dodgers, retired Dominguez, Anthony Volpe, and Wallner all in order in the first inning.

Masyn Winn, a shortstop for the Cardinals, recorded the fastest throw in a major league game since Statcast began in 2015 when she threw out Houston’s Yainer Diaz in the second inning at 100.5 miles per hour. The major league record is set on Thursday by Oneil Cruz of Pittsburgh at 97.8 mph.

After resting in his trailer, Cranston remarked, “It’s definitely going to bruise. “In this game, I might be more of a cheerleader.” Simu Liu, an actor, said of his softball skills, “I’m all athletic, zero technique.”

For Brooklyn, who defeated Cranston’s Los Angeles team in softball 15-13, Hunter Pence hit two home runs. Former San Francisco Giant Pence received repeated jeers.
