On Saturday night, the Vancouver Whitecaps upset league-leading Los Angeles FC 1-0 at home thanks to Andres Cubas’ first MLS goal in the 89th minute. The Whitecaps (7-8-3, 24 points) put on an outstanding defensive display by keeping LAFC (11-4-3, 36 points) without a shot on goal.
Following an errant cross into the 18-yard box of LAFC, the winning goal was scored. Despite Ilie Sanchez’s best efforts, the ball went straight to Cubas’ chest. The ball landed at his feet, and from 20 yards out, he fired a shot that deflected off-diving LAFC goalkeeper Maxine Crepeau and stuck just inside the left post.
In a post-game interview with TSN, Whitecaps coach Vanni Sartini stated, “We deserved to win.” “The league’s top team was defeated by us. Although it gives us more confidence, we must continue to triumph.”
This season’s first side to defeat LAFC in the second half was the Vancouver Whitecaps.
After the break, Vancouver had the majority of the scoring opportunities, forcing Crepeau to make a diving stop on a header by Tristan Blackmon in the 64th minute.
In the 75th minute, Brian White came close to giving the Whitecaps the lead. He received a pass from Pedro Vite on the right wing and sent a shot at a steep angle over Crepeau’s left shoulder, but the ball bounced against the near post and went out of play.
In the first half, Los Angeles outshot Vancouver 4-2 but no shots were on goal.
The Whitecaps fumbling deep in their area led to the best effort of the half in the 12th minute. Java Brown, a defender, successfully stopped Francisco Ginella’s shot, and the rebound ended up on Latif Blessing’s left foot near the top of the 18-yard box. The shot from Blessing bounced off the top of the crossbar and over the goal.
In the 78th minute, Los Angeles’ Cristian Arango walked off the field, ending his run of four straight games in which he scored.
