LOS ANGELES MAIN SOURCE OF RABIES INFECTION COMES FROM BATS

MALIBU, Calif. — The Los Angeles Public Health Department is handing out a rabies warning to citizens of the Los Angeles area after a bat was touched by a person or group of people, including children, at the Malibu Cafe.

“We have no evidence that this bat has infected anyone with rabies at this time. However, because rabies is nearly always fatal if left untreated, we encourage people to be cautious “Los Angeles County Health Officer Muntu Davis stated. “Parents should inquire if their children saw or touched any bats while visiting the facility.”

“Anyone who feels they or their child may have come into touch with a bat should be assessed right away for possible post-exposure rabies therapy,” Davis added.

The main source of rabies in the county is bats, and 68 rabid bats were discovered in L.A. County last year, the most since testing began in 1961.

According to public health officials, ten rabid bats have been found in 2022.

According to officials, rabies damages the nervous system of people and animals who catch the virus. Fever, breathing, and headache are among the first signs, which can quickly lead to death due to respiratory failure.
